To assess your eligibility for a business visit visa, you must confirm what type of activity it is that you will do whilst in the UK. The rules and categories are different for someone who will be paid by a UK company to visit in the capacity of an expert in a relevant profession. These types of visas are known as the Permitted Paid Engagement visa.

Also, depending on the country you are from, you might be exempt altogether from the visa application requirement and process. In these circumstances you may consider applying for an electronic travel authorization.

Visiting on Business

There are many grounds under which you can apply to visit the UK for business purposes. If you are still studying or training in a particular profession and seek opportunities in the UK, you can attend interviews, meetings, conferences or seminars.

If you already have a business established overseas, it makes it much easier to prove that you are genuinely intending to visit the UK for business purposes, for example to promote the business in this country. You cannot however sell your products or services in the UK.

Additionally, you may apply to improve your professional skills so that it benefits you with your business overseas. Under this subcategory you can undertake work-related training where such training is not available in your own country. You can also attend commercial events to promote your overseas business or profession. This can be achieved by taking part in one-off or a short series of talks at a public event.

If you do not have your own business but work for an international company, you may be carrying out your professional duties for the overseas employer during the business visit in the UK. This includes site inspections and/or overseeing the delivery of products by a UK based subsidiary or franchise to your overseas company.

You can also visit the UK to negotiate deals and sign contracts on behalf of the overseas business. This depends on your position within the organization and whether you have such authority to enter contracts on behalf of the parent company. Equally you may be providing training or sharing expertise in a particular field of work, especially in respect of internal company projects, to UK based employees.

Alternatively, if you work as a contractor for your overseas company and are assigned to assist a UK based company with installation, repair or advisory services on equipment, software or hardware.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers – Your UK Immigration Queries Simplified!

  • What is a UK Business Visit Visa?

A UK Business Visit Visa is designed for individuals who wish to enter the UK for unpaid business-related activities. This includes attending interviews, meetings, conferences, or seminars. If you are visiting the UK solely to promote or enhance your professional skills for your overseas business, this is the appropriate visa route. Note that if you’re being paid by a UK company, you may need to apply for a Permitted Paid Engagement visa instead.

  • Who is eligible for a Business Visit Visa?

Eligibility depends on your intended activities while in the UK. If you are:

    • An individual seeking opportunities (like interviews or training) while still studying or working overseas.
    • A business owner looking to promote your company in the UK (without selling products or services).
    • An employee of an international company visiting the UK to perform work-related tasks such as site inspections or negotiations.

Additionally, some nationalities may be exempt from the standard visa process and instead need to apply for an electronic travel authorization. In all cases, you must demonstrate your genuine intention to return to your home country after the visit.

  • What types of business activities are allowed under this visa?

Under a Business Visit Visa, you can:

    • Attend interviews, meetings, conferences, or seminars.
    • Enhance your professional skills through training not available in your home country.
    • Negotiate deals, sign contracts, or conduct site inspections if you work for an international company.
    • Participate in short series of talks or public events to promote your expertise.

It’s important to note that while you may explore business opportunities, you cannot sell products or services directly to UK consumers under this visa category.

  • What supporting documentation is required for the application?

To support your application, you will need to provide evidence that you meet the standard visitor visa requirements. This typically includes:

    • Proof of your planned business activities in the UK (e.g., meeting invitations, conference details, or training schedules).
    • Evidence of your current personal and financial circumstances to show you have genuine ties to your home country.
    • Documentation confirming your travel plans and arrangements.
    • For those visiting on behalf of an overseas business, additional evidence such as proof of business ownership or a letter from your employer may be required.

If your situation is more complex—such as a previous visa refusal or other immigration issues—seeking expert guidance can help ensure your documentation is complete and your application is as strong as possible.
